Efficiency in Lavender Growing

The most produced lavender type in the world is hybrid lavender (Lavandin or Lavandula hybrida). Lavandin essential oil obtained from this genus is over 1000 tons, while the total production amount of lavender oil obtained from Lavandula angustifolia is around 200 tons (Lesage - Meessen et al, 2018).

In our country, the most lavender cultivation is carried out in the villages of Kuyucak, Kuşcular, Aydoğmuş, Çukurören and Ardıçlı in the Keçiborlu district of Isparta province on an area of approximately 3200 decares and hybrid lavender (Lavandin or Lavandula hybrida) is grown in these fields. The yield of fresh lavender with stem is 250 - 750 kg from the hybrid lavender variety grown in this region. Some of the lavandin produced in our country is used in the production of lavender oil by distillation as wet, and some of it is used in the production of lavender buds by drying (Baydar and Nimet, 2013). The stemless dry flower yield varies between 100 - 500 kg/da depending on the type used in production, the climate and soil conditions of the region where the production is made, and the cultivation practices used. The essential oil ratio varies between 3 - 9% for stemless flowers (Aslancan and Sarıbaş, 2019). Although it varies depending on the planting frequency of the plantation, an average of 10 - 11 liters of essential oil can be obtained by calculating 1600 plants per decare (Gülşen, 2017).

The yield of Lavandula angustifolia genus, which started from the Thrace Region and spread rapidly to Anatolia in recent years, and from which the world's best quality lavender essential oil is obtained by distillation, is lower than hybrid lavender but much higher in economic value. Assuming that 2200 seedlings are planted per acre in mature fields, which vary according to the maintenance conditions, up to 500 kg of fresh stem flowers and 1% to 3% essential oil yield can be achieved and between 5 and 15 kg of essential oil can be obtained.
